According to historical sources, the son of Sultan Abdül mecid, Abdul hamid II. was born on September 21, 1842, in Istanbul. Growing up in the Ottoman palace, he could speak several languages fluently, especially French, Arabic, and Persian. His childhood and youth coincided with the “Tanzimat”. Abdulhamid’s 33-year reign began on August 31, 1876, when the empire was in a difficult situation with internal and external threats. He laid the foundation for constitutional government.
He tried to strengthen the relations with the Islamic world
In 1900, he ordered the construction of a railway linking Damascus, in present-day Syria, on the eastern shore of the Red Sea, through the Hejaz region which is now a part of Saudi Arabia, with the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina. The construction of the railway took eight years to reach Medina in 1908. This was the best part of his work. On April 13, 1909, a group of dissidents started an uprising in Istanbul. The deadly uprising lasted 11 days. On April 27, 1909, II. Abdülhamid was dethroned and his younger brother Mehmed V was replaced and he was sent to Thessalonica. Three years later, Abdulhamid was sent back to Istanbul and spent his last days in the Beylerbeyi Palace.
